At this level, the pilot is expected to have already gained the basic skills for controlling the glider safely on take off and landing. The focus shifts towards extending your time in the air. Your instructor will focuse on theory and practice of thermal flying, namely the principles of thermal creation, thermal cycles, discovery of thermals during flight and using thermals to gain altitude. During their altitude flights, students will practice basic safety maneuvers under the instructor's constant radio guidance. Further, students will be guided in performing their first turns into thermals and feel the power of Nature which, if used properly, can take us closer to the freedom of the birds.
Flights at this level of instruction are a lot longer - 15-40 minutes in the air or more. Depending on the skills students have developed and the meteorological conditions, altitude during flights will reach over 700 meters above ground. Briefings are held before each flight and at the end of each flight day. During these sessions, the instructor will discuss situations that occurred during flight, mistakes and ways to avoid them thus working toward further deepening of the students' knowledge and understanding of flight. Take off, landing approach and landing are already left to the students' judgement. Nevertheless, radio contact with the instructor is maintained constantly.
